New York State Launches Post-Overdose Response Team to Support Individuals and Families
New York, NY — In response to the ongoing overdose crisis impacting communities across New York, the New York State Department of Health is expanding outreach through its Post Overdose Response Team (PORT), a program designed to provide immediate, free, and confidential support to individuals and families affected by overdose.
Health officials stress that overdoses affect not only individuals, but entire families and neighborhoods. The PORT initiative aims to reduce overdose deaths, prevent future harm, and support recovery by connecting people to critical services without judgment or cost.
The program serves:
• Individuals who have survived an overdose
• Friends and family members of overdose survivors
• Community members grieving the loss of a loved one due to overdose
According to the Department of Health, the Post Overdose Response Team can connect individuals directly to lifesaving and stabilizing resources, including overdose reversal medication (Naloxone/Narcan®), medication-assisted treatment such as Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) and Methadone, fentanyl test strips, mental health referrals, and grief support. Additional assistance includes referrals for basic needs such as housing, food, and access to medications, as well as harm-reduction supplies including new syringes .
“All services are provided confidentially and free of charge,” health officials emphasized, underscoring that seeking help will not result in penalties or judgment.
Community members in need of support are encouraged to contact the Post Overdose Response Team directly:
